Blackpool's Attractions

Blackpool is one of Britain's most popular seaside resorts. It's lively and loud, with long stretches of sandy beaches, lots of entertainment, and an exciting night life. It's a particular favourite for hen and stag parties.

Several attractions give Blackpool its special appeal.

You can't think of Blackpool without thinking of its famous Tower, which has been there since 1894. It was inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and cost £290,000 to build.  As well as a circus, the tower houses a ballroom, a dungeon and an adventure playground. And then there's the Tower Eye, at the very top, 158m above the ground.  If you can stand heights it's worth the trip up (in a lift of course!) as the views are spectacular. And the Sky Walk allows you to walk along a glass floor and look right down to the street below!

Blackpool Illuminations
Blackpool Illuminations
This year is the 100th anniversary of the world famous Illuminations which light up the promenade every year from the end of August to the beginning of November (this years dates: 31 August to 4 November). In May 1912, to mark the opening of a new section of promenade by Princess Louise, 10,000 lights were festooned along the promenade. They were such a huge success that the 'Illuminations' became a regular annual event, marking the end of the summer season at the resort.

Pleasure Beach
The Pleasure Beach is home to Britain's greatest collection of classic rides and attracts millions of visitors each year. As well as the Flying Machines, it has five wooden rollercoasters, the oldest dating back to 1923. Surprisingly, these older rides are still as popular today. New rides are regularly added to the park of course, and in 2011 a rethemed children's area called Nickelodeon Land was opened.

Winter Gardens
The Winter Gardens is a large entertainment complex in the centre of the town. It has twelve different venues, including a theatre, ballroom and conference facilities. The Winter Gardens has hosted the main annual conferences for all three major British political parties as well as a number of trade unions.

So, plenty to see and do in Blackpool, whatever time of the year you go.
